View Full Version : Solaris 2008.05 image-update problem

I can get Solaris 2008.05 to install on some older 686-x86 hardware and it runs well (except for minor stuff like sound, etc. but it's a server so I don't care about sound). When I perform the pkg image-update function, all the files download and apply without error, but the system won't boot after the reboot.
Can I get some assistance for this?
Thanks

You need to update grub after this. It is a know bug and instructions are in this forum and also in announce... please search for it.

Same issue here!
And yeah, I've been searching for an hour and still can't figure out how to fix it. As a first experience with Solaris, this is actually not creating such a favourable impression.

Well, actually not the first experience with Solaris. I've actually tried it a couple of times over the years and given up on it. The only reason I tried again was the recommendation of someone whose opinion I respected.

For context, I've been a happy user of Ubuntu for a couple of years, and now using quite a bit of RHEL 5. Also experimented with a number of other distros, though I didn't like any of them as much as Ubuntu. The only current OSes I like less than Solaris so far (as far as I know in the current OS space) are Mac and Vista.

Hi

The instructions are posted here:

http://www.opensolaris.org/jive/thread.jspa?threadID=66520&tstart=0

The "builds" are bi-weekly dev builds and may break (not often)... but it's bleeding edge - fresh from the oven ;-) So apply caution. If anything significant breaks (like grub did), the announcements are made on that list.

Untested bleeding-edge developer builds distributed automatically is a really good reason not to use an OS. If they can't improve their testing, then at least they should stop distributing broken code.

It sounds like the correct Occamic response to this one is to reinstall the OS from the CD (which I've already done), and then wait two weeks (or half a week?) for the code to be fixed. However, at that point you shouldn't install it, but rather wait a couple more days after it has been released to see if many people are complaining of burns...

I used to like this sort of stuff when I was young... Now it's just an impediment I just don't want to waste my time with.

Screwups happen. Deal with it.

It's free (as in freedom) code, you're welcome to chip in and fix it. If not, then please monitor the list and update accordingly (after waiting for some time) like I do.

Secondly, this issue is trivial, one just needs to update grub. Steps are provided in the forum itself.
