ANTIVIRUS

There are many things that can go wrong with your PC, but catching a virus is one of the worst. Viruses have a simple goal - to get onto your computer, replicate themselves and infect other computers. Because the internet has linked so many computers together, viruses can spread from computer to computer, and country to country, at the speed of light. But you can stop them in their tracks with the use of anti-virus software.

Many PCs come with anti-virus software already installed. Even so, you should make sure that it has the right features to meet your needs. If you've had your program for a while now, it might be time to consider upgrading. If you haven't got any virus protection at the moment, then get some, now. We can't stress this enough - there could be a virus winging its destructive way to your machine right now, and if it hits, you could end up with significantly more damage to your valuable machine than the price of some anti-virus software. Are you really willing to take that risk?

FIREWALL

If you want to ensure the outside world can't get access to your PC while you're online, you need to install a personal firewall. As many of us pay for our internet connection using a flat rate for unlimited access, we tend to spend longer on the net, giving hackers more time and opportunity to break into our computers.
There are a variety of different firewall options available for personal use, ranging from simple free software you can download for personal use to more complicated commercial software you have to pay for.

What you need from a personal firewall is something that's going to keep the bad guys out and let in the people you trust. If you're running a simple PC configuration with one machine accessing the internet, things are fairly straightforward. If you've got more than one PC sharing an ADSL connection, you'll need more configuration options, allowing different machines on your home network access to each other.

My choice this time is Sygate Firewall by far.
Symantec (Norton) bought Sygate a few years ago in their quest to offer better endpoint security monitoring and enforcement.
