Problem:
"Hi,
I am having same kind of problem ...On boot Windows XP takes me to the Welcome Screen where both users are there " Admin and the Guest " Doesn't matter which one you try or what you put in, blank whatever. It tells you the " make sure it's spelled right bla bla bla..." then just stays right on the welcome logon screen.
You get a glimpse of the old wallpaper it was running when it first it trying to boot, not that that means anything just throwing that in.
MY QUESTION IS, how do I get anywhere to do anything if I can't get past here. Anything I try takes me right back to the logon screen. Actually, at the beginning it use to let me into Safe mode so I started AVG once. It put a couple files into the vault and it rebooted itself. After that the welcome logon is as far as it'll let me.
I have no CD, it was loaded what an OEM copy of XP a year or two ago. This is on XP Pro.
Thank you."
Solution:
A User Logon Request Is Rejected Without Any Messages
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=313322 (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=313322)
If the above is not the case, this does work and has been verified:
This problem turns out to be that the Winlogon userinit entry is being set to
"wsupdater.exe," and not "userinit.exe,".
From here, you can either opt to slave the drive and then use:
Editing the Registry for "other" Users
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_adv_reg_editing.htm (http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_adv_reg_editing.htm)
Then:
Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon.
In the right pane under Userinit, Change the key to read:
C:\Windows\System32\Userinit.exe,
Or download and run the reg file on line 263 (right hand side), if Windows is installed on C:\Winnt (file:///C:/Winnt). If not, modify the edit manually.

Or:
Place your XP CD in and navigate to the Recovery Console.
Change the C:\Windows prompt to: C:\Windows\System32 and copy userinit.exe to wsaupdater.exe
Reboot into Safe Mode and modify:
change userinit in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon from wsaupdater.exe, to userinit.exe,

IMPORTANT: The instructions below are valid for any language version of Windows XP, but be aware the download we offer in Step 7 is for the German language version of Windows XP only.
NOTE: If you used a Windows XP CD that already contained Service Pack 2 in the steps above, you may skip this step.
Insert the original Windows XP CD (Windows XP with Service Pack 2 is preferred, but not required) and reboot the computer. You may need to configure your computer to boot from the CD-ROM drive.
When the Windows XP Setup has started, press "R" to "repair the Windows XP installation using Recovery Console".
Select the Windows installation to repair (generally this is C:\Windows) by typing its number and then pressing ENTER.
Type the Administrator password and press ENTER.
Type the following commands:D: [ENTER]
CD I386 [ENTER]
EXPAND USERINIT.EX_ C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 [ENTER]
NOTE: If your CD-ROM drive has a different letter assigned to it, enter "X:" instead, where X is the appropriate drive letter. After entering "EXPAND USERINIT.EX_ C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32" you should see the text "1 file(s) copied", in which case all went well.
Remove the Windows XP CD, type "EXIT" and press ENTER to restart your computer. You should now be able to log on as normally.
Update your virus signature files (http://www.f-prot.com/support/windows/fpwin_faq/131.html) using the Updater component.
Replace the original USERINIT.EXE (acquired from the Windows XP CD) with the latest version included in Service Pack 2.To do this, *click here to download the latest USERINIT.EXE (http://www.f-prot.com/support/files/win-xp-sp2-de/userinit.exe). Save the file in C:\Windows\System32 and overwrite the existing file. For UK users obtain a copy of USERINIT.EXE from a working machine or extract it from WinXP installation CD.
