I have a Virgin router, Netgear WGR614v9 to be exact and I was hoping to flash the firmware to the newer version of v2_0_19_1_0_19 from V1.5.3_1.5.3 which I obtained from Netgear's website.
However whenever I attempt to flash the firmware internet explorer times out after about two minutes of the flashing process. I have come to the conclusion that Virgin routers can't be flashed with non Virgin firmware, is there any truth in this?

Why do you need to flash to latest firmware? Is the router causing you problems with its current firmware?

It suffers from a few problems:
1. disconnecting when downloading large files and locking up.
2. port fowarding rules dont appear to work correctly
3. bad signalling to usb wifi adaptor

There is only one way to remove Virgin's firmware from your router: This solution has been tested with various Netgear products such as ADSL mdem-routers, cable routers, etc and it is the only one that works.
1. Download the latest firmware from Netgear's Web site
Here is the latest one for your router. (http://kbserver.netgear.com/release_notes/d103324.asp)
2.Download Netgear Router repair tool from here (http://kbserver.netgear.com/release_notes/d102417.asp)
3. Follow the given instructions.
Good luck
